Check Engine Light in Arlington and Falls Church, VA

Signs of a Bad Catalytic Converter

What Is That Thing?

Perhaps you're familiar with the term catalytic converter as related to vehicles. Maybe you've even heard one of the repeated news stories about catalytic converter thefts and scrap metal sales. You may, however, still be left with lingering questions about exactly what this component is and why it's necessary. Since 1996, all new automobiles sold in the United States are required to have the second generation onboard diagnostic system (OBD-II). This is more commonly known to drivers as the check engine light.

This system and its governed parts are a portion of the initiative to control exhaust pollution and smog. An illuminated check engine light will alert you to a problem with the fuel and/or exhaust system. The advantage of the second generation system is that it generates universal trouble codes, so a mechanic can more easily determine the problem regardless of the make or model vehicle you drive. The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system. It uses precious metals and chemical reactions to change some of the more harmful exhaust gasses into less toxic vapors before releasing them into the air. If this component goes bad, it will trigger the warning light. Your transportation will not pass inspection until the underlying cause of the malfunction indicator lamp is fixed. Fortunately, you don't have to worry.
